My book was published one year ago! Through events in CA, Texas, and Arizona, I’ve met incredible people—student affairs staff supporting undocumented students, committed allies , and students affected by terrible immigration policies. It’s been an immense privilege to be in community with you all ❤️

This week I presented my book research about undocumented student activists to an awesome group of students, staff, and faculty at Long Beach City College. I appreciated being in that space, especially given that so many undocumented students start their higher ed journeys at community college✊🏽

A few photos from the protest in DT Riverside yesterday. We got there early, stayed for a couple of hours among at least a thousand ppl. After we left, we saw hundreds of people continuing to march ✊🏽

There’s also the historical context in which all of this exists, because while these individual protests started last week, immigrant neighborhoods have been targeted by law enforcement in this city for generations. And when we fail to recognize that, we fail to fully understand what’s happening.

To people sharing the incredible work of photojournalists covering this moment in L.A., please know that there’s often important context missing when it’s just a photo. Context like the size of these protests, the number of folks involved in the clashes and the events that led up to that moment.

This is at Mariachi Plaza, a city park in Boyle Heights which always features band members. Today is no different, despite the protests today.

Let's be clear: there are no riots, there are no clashes. There are unarmed community members defending their friends and family against masked militas who are targeting immigrants at work, in their homes, and while they are AT THEIR IMMIGRATION APPOINTMENTS.

The federal government is taking over the California National Guard and deploying 2,000 soldiers in Los Angeles — not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle. Don't give them one. Never use violence. Speak out peacefully.

the whole debacle over UCI firing their (initially lauded) first Latina dean is why so many of us are wary of going into administration. IMO upper admin does not really want anyone who is going to question the power structure.

This morning I had the honor of moderating a panel about women of color access to reproductive health services, justice, and healing. It was part of the UCR Ethnic Studies Undergraduate Research Symposium funded by the Mellon Foundation ✊🏽♥️

Yesterday I found out that I was promoted to Full Professor. Even though I knew I was in a good position for promotion because of my second book, I’m still kind of in shock. Only 3% of Full Professors in this country are Latina, so this feels like a big deal.
