One of the great joys this holiday is getting to connect with former students, some of whom I have known for decades.

Do you anticipate needing an editor or indexer next year? I'm currently booking for most months in 2026. I work with cookbooks and the academic social sciences and humanities--history, anthropology, gender studies, ethnic studies, polisci/IR, LIS, communications/media studies, religion, etc.

Editor's lament: the superscript footnote number comes AFTER the period at the end of the sentence.

And then the open access discussion makes it even more complicated, since the big publishers negotiate those hefty transformational agreements in ways that smaller scholarly presses simply can't.

This is why the “university vs. publisher” framing of much schol comm discourse is misleading: rules of the game are set by research institutions & scholars, & successful extractive publishers have figured out how to occupy & cement a central position w/in that game. It’s the game that need reform.

I don't love capitalism but the crisis in academic publishing isn't just the fault of publishers. The problem is waaaaay bigger, and demonizing publishers misses a huge part of the problem.

In academic publishing the ecosystem is increasingly made up of nodes that push for more more more to provide profit for private enterprise. Publishers are only one small point in that ecosystem.

Every time I catch academic dishonesty, I require a re-write/re-do. Not only does this give students a chance to make up for their mistake, but they get a chance to see what they can do when they are held accountable. It's more work & stress on me but IMO it's worth it. 1/4

You know those pesky author agreements you don’t read before signing? They spell out what’s permissible. Has anyone looked at their’s to see whether they address publisher-created supplements to articles? Has anyone written an addendum addressing this for authors entering into new contracts?

Maybe the Yale Roman history guy can apply to this one and then complain he was unfairly not considered.
