Yeah, they are fantastic book. Also, for the lawyers and academics, probably the best usage of footnotes I've ever seen in a fiction series.

Also the audiobooks have a fabulous narrator!

To add another series on to Mike’s excellent suggestion, I can not recommend the Bartimaeus series enough. Surface level similarities to shall-not be-named, but very different vibes, much better world building, and the main character certainly *believes* himself to be one of the good guys.
