American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

The flipside of some Democrats folding and caving is the vast majority of others who are absolutely raging against it and them. And that includes a lot of party leaders, electeds and former electeds who still have influence. So, hate seeing what happened happen. BUT liking the "F this!" from many.
