I really enjoyed Annalee Newitz's novella Automatic Noodle. Sweet post-apocalypse story in which a group of robots set up a noodle restaurant.

My sincere compassion to everyone in the UK dealing with this heat. We're going in July and I'm dreading our trip coinciding with a heatwave. It is just the absolute pits. Mental health in the can. And I've never done it with a 6yo. Fingers crossed it rains the whole time we're there.

There is ONE thing I am looking forward to this heatwave: Pictures of paschal candles that have melted in churches. Here's an example from a few years ago. It's my favourite phenomenon. Because, well... Look at it.

So, on one of my favorite podcasts, the Worst Idea of All Time, Tim Batt just announced that he was booked for a new podcast where guests have to write erotic fiction, & he wrote RPF about himself and his cohost of TWIAT, Guy Montgomery. THAT is how you make comedy out of RPF without punching down.

I've got to admit, a woman sports commentator calling childbirth a "disgusting moment" at which the father "has no place" re: a football player who's leaving the world cup to attend the birth of his first child is pretty funny.

I'm reading a Nero Wolfe and I think it might be the gayest one I've read yet. Archie is very attached to the leather wallet that Wolfe gave him with orchids on it and when it's stolen and he thinks Wolfe is dead he has a total breakdown. Then when he collapses, Wolfe keeps his head on his lap.

RIP Anthony Head. I've been really enjoying all the nice anecdotes about meeting him. I met him in a seedy laundromat in Toronto once. It was the middle of the day and he was washing about six pairs of jeans. Presumably he'd had some sort of disaster but he was very courteous when I said hello.

I do like Ngaio Marsh but she does have an irritating tendency to insert startlingly attractive young women with modern opinions and traditional hearts who say things like, "Oh, Norman, I've made a damned fool of myself."
