Trying to both get away from, and work against, fascists. Virtūs et Honos The Union Forever
pinned post!
Yesterday emotionally overwhelmed me, and my brain retreated to getting feelings out by writing. All I heard was the inescapable beat of Kipling's "Boots," so I riffed on that. It ended up making me even more emotional. This is what I wrote, before I even knew Good was a poet:

If someone I loved raped someone, I would not support their candidacy for political office. Yet there are still some ride-or-die Platner supporters. I just don't get it.

How does it work? Graham Platner tells the Secretary of the State of Maine that he's withdrawing from the Democratic Primary before 7/13 @ 5PM. He's then replaced on the ballot by someone who isn't a rapist

It was pretty easy not to support the Nazi tattoo guy, just saying. I mean, so far it's a pretty decent indicator not to support someone. "That guy has a Nazi tattoo." "Well, I won't be voting for or supporting him. Because then I'd be voting for or supporting a guy with a Nazi tattoo." Pretty easy!

The nice thing about taking easy moral stands like "Nazi tattoos, being a racist shitposter and sexually assaulting women are all bad" is you never have to worry about explaining why you defended any of it in service of winning an election

So the Nazi-tattoo "I like killing people" cheater is also a rapist. This is an account of a rape. Against her will, he forced himself on her and ejaculated in her after entering her house without her permission. Wondering when Platner fans will handwave this away.

Granted I know little about FIFA and soccer, but what is to stop a World Cup ref from red carding top players to give other teams better odds, if there's no review process to undo it? Messi did similar act, no red card. Ronaldo had red card before World Cup, still played. But Balogun should sit?

“The formula for democracy is a thing of multiple parts. At its core is nothing solid, just a framework, on which pieces brought across oceans can be conjoined. From many, one.” Fascinating interactive exploration of the powerful metaphor of the creation of the Statue of Liberty (I learned a lot):

I'll summarize this: Mamdani asked NYers to keep air conditioning at 78 degrees. A wave criticism hit online. A MSNBC broadcast pointed out the US Department of Energy recommends that 78 degree figure. Immediately after, the US Department of Energy deleted 6,000 web pages related to energy saving.

There are many decisions that are wrong, sometimes egregiously, as to a particular policy issue. But Slaughter belongs next to Trump v. United States as doing deep violence to the constitutional structure itself, profoundly incompatible with the very idea of power being subject to the rule of law.

This is a dangerous pattern with this Court: They find a delegation paired with a constraint, decide they don’t like the constraint, but appear totally untroubled by the idea that Congress delegated the power only *because* prior precedent assured them their constraints would be binding.

I will once again remind folks that a very sizable chunk of what looks like Congress not doing anything to push back against the president is in fact a consequence of the Court disabling/destroying all the ways Congress has tried to push back.

Effectively declares that the Constitutional Convention, the Federalist Papers, Washington, Adams, other presidents, centuries of jurisprudence, and many others were wrong about the presidency, and that the only ones who ever understood it correctly were Richard Nixon, Donald Trump, and their fans.
