but children's entertainment has gotten demonstrably worse and more harmful as the production process has been captured by private capital, a process that began with reagan. there is no pretense of education or upfront artistry, it is pure entertainment and marketing for more products. which is bad!

not enough of y'all know that it used to be illegal for media to advertise to children. reagan (because of course it was reagan) deregulated advertising and that's why so many cartoons in the 80s and 90s were glorified toy commercials. and yet, talented creators pulled art out of that system anyway!

like i'm sorry but it is just ASTONISHING how little we care about the quality of children's media. soulless product-focused slop without moral or purpose but it's okay because everyone knows kids are dumb idiot non-people who'll clap at anything and we just need them out of our hair for 90 minutes

anyway i genuinely think we should heavily regulate media for children, put up a MASSIVELY higher bar for quality than the one that currently doesn't exist, and fund its creation & distribution with generous recurring federal arts grants. and imprison peddlers of child gambling for good measure

i don't wanna insult ppl who have turned to LLM "search" due to google completely obliterating the default search experience, but imo truly the biggest predictors of whether you end up satisfied with LLM "search results" are: not knowing what you're looking for & not being able to evaluate accuracy

this is exactly what i struggle with when ppl argue that the enshittification of search engines via ad priority, SEO, websites of bot-text & LLM-generated overviews/summaries has made it so that "search" via LLM chatbot is easily the most effective option atm.

i do think masking consistently at work over the past several years meaningfully increased the amount that i talk to myself out loud
