#StetChat A3: Another thing--changing "LGBT" to "LGBTQ+" when it's supposed to mean the community at large. I cringe a little every time I see it, especially from queer spaces.

AVEN and Arocolypse are great online ace and aro communities with lots of info for allo people! ("Allo" just meaning "not aro/ace"). And I'll be regularly sharing articles on my blog about aro/ace topics in writing, editing, and publishing if that's helpful :) briaredits.com/the-briar-patch-blog

#StetChat A7: (Catching up on the chat lol). I do sensitivity reads for aro/ace topics. If it's a different LGBTQ+ identity, then I'd recommend a reader of that identity. The group Binders Full of Sensitivity Readers on FB can be another easy way to find someone!

#StetChat Q2 I leave any use of "they" alone in a text rather than editing it to be a specific gender. Same with neopronouns like xe/xem or ze/zier for example. Also keep in mind that trans people can get pregnant, have Endometriosis, be parents etc, being inclusive there too

A6: This has been my experience too. I've had a much harder time pushing for other types of inclusive language (around citizenship status, for instance) than for LGBTQIA+ or gender-inclusive stuff. #StetChat

You know, now that I think about it, this sounds like my experience too. I've (unfortunately) gotten quite a lot of pushback on my edits calling out racial and ethnic bias, whereas my LBGTQ-inclusive edits tend to sail right on through.

A10: the CW Supergirl series made a very concerted effort to be diverse and inclusive, with gay and trans main characters. I named myself Kara after Kara Danvers from this show. From music: Janelle Monáe is a queer icon!! Their music pushes boundaries in so many ways #StetChat

#StetChat Q9: Listening to people with lived experiences (and learning about intersectionality!). The EFA has good webinars on inclusive language, both LGBTQIA+ and in general, and of course there's The Conscious Style Guide by Karen Yin.

A7: #StetChat I have suggested several kinds of editors for aspects out of my expertise, including sensitivity readers. I have had several books dealing with Mexican American subjects, so there's a double sort of sensitivity process.

#StetChat Q6 I've had good responses so far. If I had an author push back, I would add more info / explanation / sources, and if they push back again, I'd let it go since I work directly with authors, so I don't have any authority on their work (while you could rely on the publisher otherwise).

But in general, I always tell clients that it's shockingly easy to make people in your audience feel *excluded,* and once you've done that, you've lost them forever. It costs them nothing to be inclusive, but it could cost them very dearly (reputationally, morally, even monetarily) to be careless.

#StetChat A7: I would definitely recommend a sensitivity reader or an editor specialised in what the issue is (or offer to do it myself if it's in my wheelhouse of queer experiences).

A9: I'm not an editor but I am a trans author and freelance journalist and need to recommend the @transjournalists.org style guide styleguide.transjournalists.org #StetChat

#StetChat Q8: Aro & Ace experiences. I feel like I don't know enough and might have some unconscious misconceptions. Reading Ace by Angela Chen at the moment =) (and lowkey having an identity crisis over it 🤣)

A3: sexual preference → sexual orientation GLAAD recommends that sexual orientation be used instead of sexual preference because sexual preference implies that a person’s sexual orientation is a choice: www.glaad.org/reference/lg... #StetChat

I'm lucky in that some of my clients already require nonbinary language (e.g. using "chairperson" instead of "chairman," etc.) But lately, I just carry that rule over and apply it even in contexts where the house style doesn't explicitly call for that. I haven't gotten any pushback on it so far.

Q2: I try to be as neutral with they/them when possible, especially when gender isn't specified. And to say that people are—not that they identify as. There are no preferred pronouns; those *are* their pronouns.
