Ooh, I also hate "identifies as." It makes identity sound like a choice, with the nasty implication that one can always "choose" differently (i.e. choose to conform). And "sexual preference" is a very close second for me. Carries all the unfortunate subtext of the former *and* centers sexuality

Hello! I'm also brand new to this and I almost never use this account (and I never used Twitter at all back in the day), and I too am eagerly awaiting the moment when I screw something up in a horrible "hello fellow kids!" fashion. Solidarity 👊

I'm lucky in that some of my clients already require nonbinary language (e.g. using "chairperson" instead of "chairman," etc.) But lately, I just carry that rule over and apply it even in contexts where the house style doesn't explicitly call for that. I haven't gotten any pushback on it so far.

Fully agreed--and I'll just add that strong storytelling is indispensable no matter what you're writing. Everything from fiction novels to dissertations to white papers benefits from a strong narrative structure. That doesn't mean "making up stories"--it means contextualizing and connecting.
