too many people think the answer to "I've written something, what now" is getting published when really the answer is cleaning your room, making a roast, refilling the bird feeder. writing is also the living we do. it's not a way to get recognition in the same way that flossing isn't.

creative writing is like trying to solve a riddle without knowing the question and every lit mag editor is just three bridge trolls in a trenchcoat

the good news is, when we DO get done sending out decisions, get ready for all sorts of news and delights about issue two and more

squeezing down our final 25 submissions into three acceptances

another day, another series of heartbreaking decisions trying to narrow down our final acceptances for issue two

EIC’s basically-new computer is on the fritz, so communication might be delayed for a couple days. rip, sorry y’all

trying to choose like five more pieces for the issue out of ~35 remaining submissions, every single decision feels like this

“wow necksnap has been so quiet lately” we have whittled our way down to a pile of 50ish subs which means we’re about 85% done with sending out decisions 😮‍💨 the end is in sight!

so satisfying to start seeing the issue come together as we accept more submissions; sooo brutally difficult to start making some decisions on the great work that we have left in the pile

Not every story is for every reader or editor or reviewer. That's why I often suggest markets for stories I pass on. It helps to read the magazine your subbing to, but write the stories you want to, and think about venues after. I used to box myself in: I'll write a "Xxxxx Story" for "Xxxxx Mag"

we've gotten through ~100 decisions, and have ~230 to go! s/o to our readers who have been hard at work vetting all submissions. our EIC still reads every one of them and is doing this alongside his day job, so your patience & support is a blessed balm to his psyche. thank u all for that

fwiw, re: decision emails – don't sweat if you submitted early in the sub call & are still waiting! we *mostly* move chronologically starting with the earliest subs, but subs can move buckets & go through multiple rounds of reading, so it may take longer for some subs than others
