I could feel weird about spending each evening reading for many hours instead of watching tv or playing video games, but I can’t just bring myself to do it. Reading is great! And when I’m in a reading mood, it takes precedence.

Was my heart thumping out of my chest checking Eisner nominations? Yes. Am I disappointed True North was not selected? Sort of. It's the only award I submitted the book for. I can rest on the knowledge I put in a ton of work on it and continue to be proud of all 512 pages.

The exciting and intoxicating part of research is reaching a point where you know you've discovered something (even if it's a small something) that has never been explored before and knowing that using it to tell a wider story will make that story much richer. It's also why research can never end.

Ted Turner was the biggest (and richest) champion of classic movies we have ever seen. Without him, TCM wouldn’t exist. Without him, folks in the industry now wouldn’t care about things like restoration and finding lost films. It would still be a cottage industry for a niche interest.
