I’d be more specific, in fact: we are seeing different FORMS of force shown when ICE is acting in “coming after a presumed immigrant” mode vs “freaking out at any show of resistance or protest” mode. Neither is more justifiable than the other necessarily.

A friend in Minneapolis just sent me this video. Looks like thousands have come together for a vigil after an ICE agent shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good. This was my neighborhood for several years before coming to Portland.

I hate to break it to you, but heavily-armed government militias are roaming unchecked through US cities and shooting human rights observers dead in the streets. That's happening in our country.

This seems significant: not a FORMER DHS official, but a SENIOR (current) one saying the officer who fired acted counter to training. This is not an admin that admits mistakes. And they are hanging this guy out to dry on Day One. I think they know this is bad. Really bad.

As a law professor, since January 2025 I have often been asked, “Can they do that?” It’s the wrong question. Men with guns can do many things. What makes a man with a gun a law enforcement officer is law. This is just men with guns.

Maduro is a brutal and oppressive dictator of Venezuela. Trump has no legitimate legal basis for military action against Venezuela under United States or international law. Both of those facts are simultaneously true.

Trump being in the red on immigration is again, a five alarm fire for Republicans, especially those on the border. It’s a sign that people no longer associate immigration with crime or border security. This is THE issue for Trump alongside tariffs and people hate it.

Despite what we are often told, this line from Mamdani’s inauguration speech is what true pragmatism actually looks like: “Beginning today, we will govern expansively and audaciously. We may not always succeed. But never will we be accused of lacking the courage to try.”
