On New Year's Day, 1 January 1779, The Piece Hall, Halifax welcomed the public for the first time with a significant ceremony organised by The Piece Hall committee. The event was marked by a large crowd gathered from Halifax and surrounding areas to witness the opening.

Interesting thing I learned today: in Portugal, municipal cemeteries became a thing about a decade before they became a thing in England (1840s vs 1850s). I always thought we had adopted municipal cemeteries much later, so this is a nice surprise.
