The artist LS Lowry was born #OTD 1 November 1887. His 'Going to the Match', 1953, was the centrepiece of the brilliant exhibition of that name at Bury Art Gallery last year, documenting the history of Bury FC and its supporters, one of the best exhibitions I saw in 2024.

Thomas Daniel, 'a respectable merchant of this city', and Mrs Eleanor Daniel, a memorial in Bristol Cathedral. Few families were so enriched by the Atlantic Slave Trade as the Daniel family. At least 4,400 enslaved African people worked on their Barbados plantations at Emancipation in 1834. 1/2

The Ramshorn Kirkyard, Glasgow, photographed from above one sunny morning last month. The burying grounds are arranged in rows under the trees, each for an individual or family. Opened in 1719, it predates Thomas Rickman's 1824 church to the south. The last interment was in 1915.

Today's the feast of the Douai Martyrs, 158 Catholic priests executed by the English state 1577-1680. One of them was St Henry Morse, born Brome, Suffolk in 1595. This glass tribute sits in the church dedicated to him at Diss, Norfolk. Martyred at Newgate in 1645, he was canonised in 1970. 1/2

A spade, skull and coffin on the headstone of Jeptha Waller at Ramsholt, Suffolk. It's suggested he was the sexton or gravedigger, but in fact the Wallers were wealthy landowners, and they're symbols of mortality. The date, January 3rd 1748/9, is from the days when the New Year began on March 25th.
