It can be delightful to see the dawn occasionally when travelling. This one, for instance, was really lovely. Seeing it every goddamn morning, though, gets a little tired. Eventually I'll get off of west coast time, right? RIGHT?

Why we didn't make it to Rotorua today. On the road for 6 hrs, to end up right back where we started. All highways to the eastern side of the North Island closed. Damn near didn't make it back to my friend's house.

Suddenly realizing--on departure day--that a couple of books and some music may not cut it for 24 hrs in transit. So now I've overcompensated: 2 movies (I'll finally watch Sinners!) + several episodes of a series + updated Timberborn. That should sort me out. Aotearoa New Zealand, here I come.

Finally admitted to myself that my friend's sweater is beyond repair, and I should just recreate it. With the sweater as a map, if I can find the right yarn yarn, it's doable. It's been giving me guilty pangs for over a year & now I'm obsessed. Turns out this is the puzzle my mind wants right now.

I have made a ridiculously elaborate seafood meal for two (the secret plan being having enough food-safe leftovers that I don't have to cook for days), cleaned the kitchen, taken out the raw-oyster-shell-laden trash* and started the dishwasher. I win, in old people terms.

Yeah, seriously, fuck that guy. His entire schtick seems to be being annoying. And not in a clever way, just in a kid doing it for a reaction way. Maybe I'm wrong? Am I missing something? Also, his band sucks. (I saw them open for Shonen Knife & we all decamped to the dive bar next door.)

The niece asked if I'd make her a cabled Aran sweater for her xmas (and possibly also birthday) present. "You can say no! I know it's a lot of work!" I cannot say 'no' to that kid. Good thing she's small. And her mum's willing to split the yarn cost. (Those things *eat* yarn.)

It's Friday. I'm making vegan challah dough. This thread will be a lesson about the role of eggs in making challah bread, and what happens when you have to substitute them out. My normal challah dough recipes call for 7 eggs. 6 for the dough. 1 for egg wash. Remove them, and stuff happens +

I finished Tom Cox's Villager last week & had to think about it before posting. Such a good book, IMO, & trying to describe it felt like trying to wrap a cobweb in clingfilm. So many delicate threads running through it, tying all the stories together in subtle ways. This one will be worth re-reading

Watched del Toro's Frankenstein. It is, of course, gorgeous to look at--the colours, the cinematography, the design, all so well thought out and visually striking--appropriately melodramatic, and (I think) a worthy interpretation. However, I can never hear the name Frankenstein without thinking

Went to our mayor's Community Appreciation night, and 1. It was really nice to see our community garden recognized as part of the network of groups that add joy to our city; 2. Holy shit have I forgotten how to socialize. I mean, I was never super good at it, but that was...very awkward.
