When I got into grad school, my undergrad mentor told me 3 things: 1. Your teaching will sustain you 2. Have friends on the outside 3. Every publication is still a work in progress While all of these have been useful (with different interpretations over time), leaning on #3 a lot these days.

My profession used to be where you could DO that, where you were expected to. Not everything needs to be forever or even a long time, but better minds than mine have long worried about how fragile it feels like everything is, & what it means to shift to new metaphors in the face of precarities.

Not enough time to follow this up right now, but I’ve been mulling over the idea of sustainability. Specifically, what endures when you’re not around to keep it going. Interdependency, common goods, generational buy-in. I don’t know that I’ve managed it consistently, but I see the folks who have.

So many young political reporters showed their ignorance of historical context in running with Trump’s claim of a landslide. I think it was a millennial reporter thing of not being interested in anything before their generation. No one who knows politics would have called 2024 a landslide.

The chances of any of us being here are infinitesimally small. Every one of our ancestors going back to the beginning of life on Earth had to have those specific offspring that they did, meet those mates, etc.. So why are we all being forced to live through this awful Trump-Vance timeline now?!

I think about this a lot, because I think we lose something when talk about “critic” & “fan” (& “creative”) versus thinking about criticism, fandom, & making as distinct *practices* that sometimes have fuzzy borders. The aca-fan folks of course have thought about this a lot in certain ways.
