Ontario voters who chose same liar for the third term in a row are one of the reasons I’m still very worried about the upcoming federal election. The other reason I’m worried are all of the Ontarians, who chose not to vote because they decided there wasn’t a point, or their voice didn’t matter.

Well, today has been a day, hasn’t it? Kim Jong-un has called for North Korea to go to full nuclear readiness, Telegram has been found to be allowing posts where people offer money to anyone planning an attack on mosques, and an American official is suggesting redrawing the Canada USA border.

This! ⬇️ Took me a long time to realize that those fables were so often teaching stories that were manipulated by those in power to keep everyone else in line. Teaching stories are incredibly valuable, in any culture. We can learn different lessons in current contexts. We can change the stories.

When people say that they didn’t think this could happen, (read: to them), we need to take that as an opportunity to look at the ways we have been warned, over and over again, usually by people of colour, and we need to decide how we are going to move forward keeping the lessons in mind this time.

Just finished reading @samiraahmed.bsky.social 2019 YA novel, Internment. It is not new that artists are often the canaries in the coal mine, calling out warning of the slippery slopes, dangerous precipices, and pitfalls we are approaching. This is particularly true of artists of colour.

This is not accidental. This is a Canadian politician, deliberately utilizing the techniques being demonstrated in the USA right now. I know that there are Canadians who would like to see Canada be more like the US right now, but the stats suggest that that is not the majority. Call this out.

An excellent question. I think that realistically, it’s often that in narratives where people go into the past, they are in a position to change huge events (with potentially small actions) for which they already know the outcome, or they’re concerned about in someway, removing free choice.

I’m grateful for the fact that, at this time, in Canada, we still have laws that clearly outline when freedom of expression (not just speech) is limited if/when it infringes upon the charter rights of other people. We cannot, however, afford to take this for granted - it’s already under threat

In the US, public information pages about the efficacy of vaccines are being forced off-line. There is a concerted effort in multiple locations across that country to actually ban people from choosing to be vaccinated. People will sicken and die unnecessarily, and the impacts will increase.

We are seeing the existing abusive power structures being stripped of the few guard rails we’ve taken for granted. The gloves are off and no holds are barred. They’ve not just moved the goal posts, they’ve moved the entire field and gutted the rules. Creative resistance is necessary now.

It is a racist, elitist, and misogynistic abuse of power to prevent people from accessing whatever kind of healthcare they need, in the pursuit of health and well-being, and with full autonomy over their bodily choices. Not only are anti-abortion laws not pro life, they’re not even pro birth.

It’s good that there are cases being brought against the actions of the Trump administration, and it’s good that the problems are being documented in some way. (however, vulnerable documentation is at the moment). They will not be a sufficient solution given the current admin’s disdain for law.
