Found a book from 1996 called "Gaslighting, the Double Whammy, Interrogation and Other Methods of Covert Control in Psychotherapy and Analysis" by psychiatrist Theodore Dorpat (who died in 2006). He seems to have been the first to refer the gaslighting trope back to the psy disciplines.

Currently researching the "gaslighting" trope. Found a reference to a TV episode from from "The Grace and Allen Show" in 1952 where one character suggests to give somebody "the gaslight treatment". Back then it could still be played for laughs... www.chronicle.com/blogs/lingua...
