Sad and disturbing news. Almost certainly linked to illegal persecution of these amazing birds.

We desperately need some convictions for these crimes - not just those killing the birds, but those who are paying them to do it. The shooting estates refuse to clean up their act. It's time to make them.

Appalling! Killing raptors is a risk worth taking. Time we started to use other techniques such as electronic surveillance monitoring radio and mobile phone communications. The raptor persecution “hot spots” are known. There can only be a few radios and mobile phones operating in these rural area.

Police investigate after white-tailed eagles go missing across UK

Yet more birds of prey getting depressed, killing themselves, removing their satellite tags, then disposing of their own corpses. It's hard to believe, but the statistics don't like. Either that or the shooting industry is involved. But that's a stretch of the imagination too far.

Guardians of the countryside at it again...guardianing birds of prey to death.

Exactly. That would help ‘plug the hole’ whereas the reintroduction plan would simply open the tap with the drain left wide open.

And then back home I immediately come across this. Sickening.

Just one bird in mind this afternoon/evening at Cabo salinas, male Hen Harrier, one of my absolute favourites. Within five minutes of arriving I was enjoying excellent views! Also Dartford Warbler, a good number of waders, lots of Flamingos as per and a nice flock of Spoonbills.

Over £500,000 of public money spent on a doomed attempt to "reintroduce" European hen harriers to the UK. It seems Natural England will do anything to avoid confronting the landowners, hunters, farmers and game keepers who persecute these birds. They also go to great lengths to avoid transparency.

For that kind of money you could hire half a dozen coppers to hang around a few carefully chosen locations (North Yorkshire maybe?) and help those Hen Harriers live longer and happier lives.

In almost all such cases of raptor poisoning, the poisoners are gamekeepers working for the owners of pheasant/grouse shooting estates. Yet another way in which the behaviour of the ultra-wealthy damages the natural world.

This is a genuine question: Outside of the UK, does anyone know of another National Park where it is an annual event to release thousands of non-native birds? Or even occasionally? I only ask because the more I think about it, the more barking mad it sounds. #birds #nationalparks
