Not enough discussion about the Utah porn tax, which targets any material sold in the state as well. I imagine some adult game devs will simply stop selling to Utah / geoblock the region due to the associated costs proposed (7% tax + $500 annual fee)

The problem, as I see it, is this: Any time these bills use the phrase “harmful to minors,” they’re creating a madlib. Fill in the blanks later with what legislators believe is harmful to minors. So today it’s porn — but tomorrow, it might be “material on what it means to be transgender”

Important: While the Utah bill is framed around porn taxes, the actual letter of the bill discusses “material harmful to minors.” So this could start as a porn tax, and if Utah defines LGBT content as “harmful to minors,” balloon into something so much bigger. As is the case with this genre of bills

Censorship is always arbitrary, and used to target those who are ideologically unpopular and politically powerless. That means queers and sex workers, not billionaires.

This misses the key distinction which is that the Online Safety Act (& KOSA in the U.S.) is about punishing, censoring and surveilling *users*. None of these “child safety” laws are about punishing actual big tech companies. They’re ONLY about censoring speech, they reward big tech financially

It’s crucial to recognize this is not hypocrisy. People in power don’t actually want to regulate the business models of these big tech companies, they want to use liberals/leftists rightful anger at big tech to pass sweeping surveillance/censorship laws while letting these companies profit

The "internet safety" bills being rammed through Congress and state legislatures are this generations equivalent of the Patriot Act — a path for mass surveillance, censorship and surrendering of fundamental rights. It creates ICE for the internet.

Call your reps, tell them to PROTECT section 230, and do not vote to repeal it. If it is removed, it will be the end of the free speech on the internet
