My biggest concern about this technology in the short (and, well, medium)-term is what is does to US, especially the current generation of doctors in training. Even the difference between my third year and first-year residents is pretty stark in their use of AI tools (especially Open Evidence)

ICU diagnostic conundrums (conundra?) are great to exercise the brain cells but they comprise maybe 5% of all our cases? The greater bulk of medicine is routine management of common disease

It’s like how using a calculator for all calculations makes us worse even with basic arithmetic. Except instead of not being able to multiply 2 digit numbers in our head, we can no longer navigate our neighborhoods, decide what to eat for dinner, or distinguish reality from fiction on social media.

Not only is making esoteric diagnoses just a tiny part of our job, but IMHO we are collectively underappreciating how the overuse of AI in daily life erodes critical thinking more generally.
