Excellent post on the lack of empirical support for stereotype threat, from someone deeply involved in the research. Also, importantly, "stereotype threat isn't real" != "stereotypes are not threatening." These are very different claims, but the former is often taken to mean the latter.

Im bearish on current AI models (ie LLMs). I work w/ them every day, but think use cases are much smaller than hype. I’ve been shocked by how many people (academics!), who clearly don’t understand the tech, making super confident claims about their uselessness and “evil” Your posts are public!

Have to say, the replies to this have been so depressing. @afinetheorem.bsky.social and @joshgans.bsky.social have worked to develop an innovative product. Whether it improves learning is an empirical question, we’ll find out soon. The sad people in the replies should be blocked.

I know this is the nice place, but I'm on lists that anyone can see called things like, "harassers", "piss drinkers", "bigoted freaks", and "hate enablers." This appears to be based on accounts I follow or posts I like? Don't recall liking any piss refreshments. Seems like a toxic feature ☹️

America is deeply imperfect but it’s also very prosperous. Our political system is clunky but has delivered reforms and is capable of being reformed itself. Most Americans - not all, but most - live extraordinarily comfortable lives by any reasonable historic standard.

Playing around with this awesome data explorer. The poorest decile in the U.S., contrary to my expectations, does better than in most of Europe (this is inclusive of tax and benefits). Another illustration of how rich the U.S. is!

What do folks here on bluesky think of these studies from Lee Jussim? I'd like to see it peer reviewed, but the basic effects seem very straightforward - read DEI scholars' excerpts and you will see objectively innocuous behavior as racist.

Tiny rant: I know some people are upset about the election, me too. But some of the commentary from progressives (i.e., most of academia) can be summarized as, "those poor uneducated people are too stupid to vote right," and well, that's my family you're talking about..1/2

Please shout this from the rooftops! If the “right answer” is 3% and the average response is 30%, this doesn’t mean people are “wrong” and actually believe it’s 30%. They might just not be paying attention to your survey and/or are guessing randomly.

I'm worried about echo chambers because my academic life is homogeneous in ideas and I see the negative effects of it. I think this is because of my personal experience growing up in urban poverty. I'm sensitive to elitism. Going home challenges me intellectually in a way these communities don't.
