Finally! Nearly a quarter of new UK homes now have heat pumps—big progress since we highlighted the fossil fuel problem with Ben Webster at openDemocracy in 2022. Next step: fully implement the Future Homes Standard and end fossil fuels in new builds.

Good article here on how Scandinavian countries have embraced heat pumps moving almost entirely off fossil fuel heating. In short: - grants - lower electricity price - carbon tax making other options expensive - a ban on fossil fuel heating. If this worked for them, it could work in the UK too.

NEW: A UK firm intends to start making this new form of "thin" triple glazing with a 0.5mm centre pane of super strong glass developed by Corning. It could let people to swap out their double glazing for triple glazing - without changing their window frames.

It's a myth that "hydrogen combustion produces only water vapour". Burning hydrogen results in harmful NOx emissions. In urban areas this becomes the dominant source of NOx pollution if we switched to hydrogen for heating. Shocking to see H2Heat project financed by the EU peddling such untruths 👇

People often take the view of 'waiting until the boiler packs in' but this demonstrates that the best time to swap is when it's financially and practically convenient for the end user. Plus, you'll maximise the savings the sooner you do it.

Does it make sense to rip out a new gas boiler and replace it with a heat pump? From carbon perspective yes: Replacing a new gas boiler with a heat pump in the UK cuts emissions by 77-86%. This includes embodied emissions from manufacturing. A heat pump offset its embodied carbon after 13 months.

It's insane that politicians will actively try to spoil progressive developments which will benefit the whole world just for the sake of a bit of political gain. Pathetic. When will we embrace a political system which seeks to benefit the masses rather than just tribal point scoring?

There is no country/zone with a) high prices and low carbon emissions or b) with low prices and high emissions. The higher the carbon emissions from electricity generation in 2024, the higher the prices and vice versa. HT Esko Heinonen

A reminder that electrification remains the single most important route to reducing emissions. Increasing the rate of transition to heat pumps is key to that. More legislation is required to limit gas installations in existing properties urgently.

Often we miss the point when evaluating heat pumps, that they ultimately reduce the energy demand on the energy networks. Over the course of Nov, Dec and Jan my total energy usage has reduced by 40% a month. It's also a bonus bonus that it's saved £150 during this time.

How to find oil. Seismic acquisition involves air guns firing into the sea from large vessels every four to 10 seconds, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until surveys are completed. The blasts create loud sound waves that can penetrate more than 10km beneath the seafloor. Isn’t that delightful.

Really interesting. Mitsubishi ecodan 8.5kW. Left of the line it's running in Auto Adapt mode with temperature differential turned off. Right of the line it's running with the flow temperature set to 33 (the target temp based on the curve and external conditions). Cycling at around 2 per hour.

Decent offering from Tomato energy for homes with a heat pump compared to

Cosy. Feels like Octopus are giving with one hand and taking with the other at 40p kWh during peak times! Add an EV to Tomato and it's even cheaper. No option to combine with Octopus.

Disturbed to learn that the gas boiler ban is being scrapped. Majority of people renovating a property stick with gas as It's seen as the easy option and familiar. The only way to change this is through legislation - the government has bottled it!
