Ever watch a film that makes you blurt ‘HOLY FUCK’ when the end credits roll? Just happened to me with Thief, Michael Mann’s 1981 synth wave masterpiece: a cars hissing on noirish glistering wet asphalt, blackly fatalistic, violent orgasm of a cinematic experience

His early career after SteepleChase producer Nils Winther recognized his talent during a Ron McClure session. I recommend.

I think one of the things about bluesky is that for a lot of its users, it represents a kind of retirement from social media. Like I’m tired and I want to get out of the game

Did you know that in the last century, our security guards used to patrol with a dog by their side? That loyal companion provided an extra set of eyes, perhaps allowing the guard to briefly lose themselves in the mastery of Rembrandt’s brushwork. 😜 👁️

An Amazon review on this record: “Ethan Iverson keeps such an ironic distance between himself and a set of jazz standards that his solos seem to be enclosed in air quotes." And that was only the lead to the sometimes knotty chamber music of the Billy Hart Quartet with these same two gentlemen

I barely even trust the computer for this stuff. If I had my way I'd still march into the travel agent, ask what holidays they recommend, write a cheque, and emerge with a little envelope of plane tickets and hotel reservation print-outs which I then have to not lose for three months.

I thought Cal Tjader was only high-octane Afro-Cuban rhythms, but he could be a smooth straight-ahead West Coaster if he wanted to, quasi chamber at times

One Fine Morning is a delicately sketched film. It is cinema in pencil, rather than pen; a film of light attenuated mornings, understated conversations where decisions are never quite made, melodrama happening off screen.
