Traditionally I have yellow cake with chocolate frosting for my birthday. As I was mixing the cake batter I saw brown dried bits that smelled like chocolate cake and that concerned me enough that I tossed the whole thing because who knows what it was. Better safe than sorry.

My sibling took my dad to the doctor today. We are going to start palliative care, which is not hospice! He has started skipping lunch, so the staff has been instructed to not give him his afternoon insulin if he doesn't eat lunch. Loss of appetite is one of those important signals.

From age 13 on if I was home for my birthday then mom made homemade pesto for dinner. It continued well into adulthood. She'd go out to the backyard and pick the basil. Today when I opened the basil container it felt like mom was with me for a minute. She was so close I could almost touch her.

Behold! The birthday pesto! I used pecans in lieu of pine nuts because with as much garlic is it it, the type of nuts hardly matters.

Because of celiac we rent houses when we travel unless it is for an overnight. We cook the majority of meals as I don't want to be sick on vacation. But! We did have one lovely meal out.

We are home! Orientation was very long! But! We had the best time at dinner with the roommate's parents. We got lots of good stuff done like figuring out the closest safe gas station, the closest pharmacy, and that sort of thing. We chilled at the rental house because it poured every single day.
