Was at Papas Papbar (the board game cafe where I spend most og my incomplete phd time, many hours with great friends, even more with my daughter). What a perfect place. Especially when alle the good people take turns to also be there (ok, only some of them, but I felt lucky). Almost 10 years!

It’s odd how it works. Just had new ideas for a silly game I abandoned a year ago. Why? Because I tried to force myself to work on another game I didn’t feel like. Does my brain save up derail-ideas for later or do the appear when “needed”?

First half of day two of Fastaval was a couple of prototypes. And then we played DystopAI, by @eanderssonsunden.bsky.social and Daniel Olai - an absolutely crazy engine-builder-manipulation-oddity. So much fun to explore! Many moments of: Oh, you can do _that_?!

First day of Fastaval is over (very early due to tired and slightly overwhelmed daughter). We got to play Rene’s Postulate (not made for my preferences, but a fun start) as well as a few old titles. Lots of familiar faces ❤️ and loud noises. Tomorrow we will dive in proper for a full day of awesome.

The best deadlines: postponed. Had a few days with time to play around and learn new stuff. It is great to have time to touch code that doesn’t urgently have to be done. I enjoy.

The project for this seeking is baking rye bread. We have everything, but except all the ingredients. Ok, technically we have a sour dough and water… but no flour. Both my daughter and I are terrible at planning. But at least she had the energy to go shopping in the middle of the evening.

Recently my daughter (14) wanted a sewing machine, so we got her one for late Christmas present. Now she asks me all kinds of advice on how to sew. I am equal amounts flattered and terrified. (I can kinda sew a pillow case, but not much more).

What a year. Didn’t do much of what I wanted to, somehow a lot of _other_ got in the way. Mostly work. I played way too little and worked even less on designing games, and not even sure next year will be better/different. A bit of a “meh” year…

Suna Valo is maybe the perfect spouse-game (if you have a spouse that can handle a bunch of rules, but aren’t very fond of aggressive interaction). Happy merge of mechanisms and feel from 7 Wonders Duel, Deus and Isle of Skye. 2 player only and very, very cozy!

Today we gave away ~$10K to the customers of our customer (or more precisely, we found out that during the past weeks, we have done so). Somehow it feels much worse than more expensive mistakes because there is a number attached. Don’t put a number on it.

Played Moon Colony: Bloodbath today. Very pleasant experience with low chance of slowly revealed depth. It’s light and fun, and most of all reminds me of bingo (but with the added joy of killer robots). Right now I adore it, but I’m not sure it can handle repeated play or too high player count.

Played Signal by Jasper Beatrix at work today. Was fun to see a bunch of developers debug their way through the game. Aliens and legacy systems are more or less the same.

Played Anno 1800 (the board game) again yesterday. It is still not great, but I really want it to be. There is something very satisfying about the checking off the needs of one person after another until your hand is empty. Any game out there that does this better? Or maybe someone could make it?

Bureaucracy: We have a paid cleaner to clean the house. My wife will now go clean elsewhere to satisfy employment-requirements for applying for citizenship. Requirements she has fulfilled a while ago, but no matter, only employment immediately before evaluation matters.

Last Saturday and this, we played Kanban again. Like most Lacerdas, I keep thinking: “is this actually a bit clunky?” But when digging deeper I realize Kanban is great exactly because of how hard it is to navigate optimally. It would be less good if polished too much.

Today, the why-is-nothing-breaking-anxiety is turning into nothing-is-breaking-pride. My role in the team has been to worry about quality (sometimes against quite strong adversaries on the business side). And it bloody well worked. I worry. And it helps.

Today we launched a major it project, and the strangest thing happened. Nothing broke. I’m a bit stressed from rushing to get everything done and somehow it makes me more anxious that nothing needs fixing than the expected adjustments. Tomorrow I hope one of those feelings goes away.

I used to teach programming, and for reasons outside my control I had to teach C# as first language. Would have been so much easier today!
