OK, this is wild. In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them. It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*. What the HELL? 1/

Creatives in the UK deserve strong trade unions that represent their interests and fight for a better creative ecology. We don't have that yet and I know a lot of people have felt let down by the society of authors, but we can change it for the better.

Every writer against genocide belongs in their union. The Society of Authors does not stand for a free Palestine. Not yet. Amid Israel’s destruction of libraries, bookshops, printing presses and publishing houses in Gaza, the SoA’s lack of solidarity is driving members to leave the union. [1]

I love stories where each new perspective unpeels everything you thought you knew and Hirokazu Kore-eda's Monster does that masterfully. Such an achingly beautiful film that treats its characters with immense sensitivity.

Long overdue, I saw Pather Panchali. What a film! Poetic and intimate. This is the start of Apu's story but it's a film about women. The old woman, the mother, the maid, their small joys are so sweet, but mostly they broke my heart. Such a sensitive portrait of having dreams that feel out of reach.

I've seen it a few times now and every time Jigarthanda DoubleX just makes me happy. It's such a dense, dynamic, explosion of a film, heaving with villains and bad intentions. A wild ride. (Shout out to my lady Malaiarasi - she's a badass with not enough screen time.)

Looking back, I find some of the writing a bit clumsy, but 'Wild' is something I'm really proud of. It won the MMU Novella Award in 2016 and for the first time I really felt like people were engaging with my work seriously. I finally felt like a writer.
