It's worth cataloguing what has happened in the water world in the last few weeks alone. It paints a picture of a Government who are not at all prioritising the health of our waterways, and who are failing on multiple fronts to put in place the measures we actually need. A watery rant 🧵

An interesting thread on the impact of lobbying and where power lies in Ireland. That picture, that's us. Our beautiful lake, polluted. Despite all of the concrete decades-long evidence to suggest the derogation should not be extended so we can begin to restore water quality, here we are.

There appears to be no accountability for those who pollute our waterways. Sterner punishment and the revoking of licences need to be part of the solution.

Deputy Whitmore asking the question we all want to know the answer to. Although they didn't say it, it seems the answer to the question about when the EPA pull the plug on a non-compliant discharge licence is never. They never have to date. Polluters can do their thing and still get licenced.

Unfortunately what we're facing at Ladys Island in #Wexford is only the tip of the iceberg of a substantial national problem.

What is the punishment for pollution of this kind? Is there any kind of accountability for businesses and individuals who are found to be non-compliant? Our systems are failing us.

It seems like water quality at our local beaches has been a significant issue this summer. All of this is connected to a lack of action to support our water quality. It doesn’t need to be this way. We need top down action to depollute our waterways now.

Our volunteers spent another day gathering signatures for our petition to #SaveLadysIslandLake. This time, at the annual pilgrimage. Lady’s Island is a site of religious significance for Catholics. We had many engaging and supportive conversations about how to ensure action is taken.

Unfortunately, plans are no good unless they’re actioned. This is something we know all too well in #Wexford. Decades of plans but no action. #SaveLadysIslandLake

We're kinda pulling punches here - clearly toxic pollutant behind this horrific fish kill - it should become a criminal investigation www.rte.ie/news/environ... reporting playing down the long-term detrimental environmental impact and cost - far far beyond that on immediate angling businesses.

Unfortunately the situation in #Wexford is replicated across the country. In fact the water quality at many of #Wexford’s beaches have been so poor this summer that they’ve been closed to swimmers for significant periods. We need a top down approach to improve water quality across the board.
