2. when the virus flares up, i lose most of my useable vision and see almost nothing but white fog. even when the virus isn't flaring, i still have to get past a bunch of that same fog. colors are not vibrant to me. this means that when i want to look at your art, sometimes i can't tell what it is

3. in that case, i use a screenreader. it DOES NOT pick up images. no modern screenreader picks up images reliably. that's where your alt text comes in! my screenreader WILL pick up alt text. most screenreaders do, unless it's a fucking ancient one. alt text is how i experience your piece.

5. basically, alt text is a way for people with visual impairments to look at your art. it's a chance to include more people in your space. it ALSO helps other people who use screenreaders for whatever reason, but it was designed for blind/VI folks. it's helpful. it's welcoming. use alt text.

1. alright folks, let's talk about alt text. more specifically, WHY proper use of alt text is important from the perspective of somebody who needs it. i am a hair away from legally blind. my optic nerve in one eye is bad, and my other eye's cornea was ruptured multiple times due to a virus. 🧵
