There’s no type of guy I’m more predisposed to love than the Penultimate Badass, a savvy veteran who isn’t quite good enough to hang with the best, but who shows impressive skill and determination anyway: Ramba Ral and Norris Packard, Piccolo, Jim Gordon, Garrus Vakarian, etc.

Now's as good a time as any to reiterate that my show is not an advertisement for DC Comics. I love Batman comics and think they're useful for understanding American culture, but there are plenty of ways to read them that don't involve forking over cash to Warner Bros. Discovery.

On the one hand, I'm not sure what anybody—GFM included—was expecting. You're contracting for a company that's conservative and obsequious even by the standards of corporate America. On the other, I'm not sure why DC expects anybody with a conscience to pay for one of their comics again.

In Alien: Earth, everyone seems to understand and resign themselves to the fact that they’re working for EvilCorp, but one of the keys to Alien’s success is the fact that the Nostromo crew think they’re just working a regular job that sucks. They don’t know they’re expendable.
