Absent home rule, local municipalities are left with little options to fund basic services long term. This fact plus the “uniformity” provision in our state constitution are the biggest impediments to good, efficient governance in PA. (And the PA Senate 🫠)

I get the political realities of divided government in PA make this more likely than simply raising fees/taxes. But it’s reflective of the systemic problem in PA of how we lack good enabling legislation that allows local municipalities to raise revenue to fund public services (like transit).

Major props to Oakmont Borough here. In response to ICE activity, Dormont last fall reiterated its policy of non-involvement with federal immigration enforcement. It’s good to see other municipalities take similar stances in response to blatant trampling of basic rights.
