I became obsessed with the uncanny valley while writing Broken Mirror. Researchers in the mid 2010s were exploring robotics and digital replicas of human beings. Video games were becoming lifelike and photorealistic. But there was a problem: the uncanny valley. 🌈🚀💫 🦾 🏳️‍🌈📚 💙📚 🪐📚 ⚡️📚

I've always thought of gender and sexuality as important dimensions of the human experience alongside all the other things that make our lives interesting: creativity, devotion, pain, ambition, grief, and celebration.

Eventually, it becomes clear that Victor must leave home if wants to remain free. He and his best friend Elena hop in a car and leave Oakland & Bayshore, heading through the Long Valley on their way to the border. This road trip is their chance to escape together and rekindle their friendship.
