Today is Remembrance Sunday. A few weeks ago in A-Comic-A-Day, I said that I hadn’t read an issue of Commando. I saw one in the shops this week and so now I have read issue 5903, The Lions of Ypres.

IDW Publishing put out a comic in 2014 called Star Trek: Harlan Ellison's The City on the Edge of Forever: The Original Teleplay. Is that the longest title I’ve had on A-Comic-A-Day? It’s a contender! The series basically does what it says on the tin.

Today is N7 Day, when Mass Effect fans come together to celebrate the greatest computer game series ever. And no, I will not be accepting alternate opinions. So, A-Comic-A-Day must be a Mass Effect title. I’ve gone for Mass Effect: Invasion because I especially love the covers. #N7Day #MassEffect

I chose today’s A-Comic-A-Day, the Free Comic Book Day story Mass Effect: He Who Laughs Best for three reasons. First, it’s Mass Effect, easily my favourite computer game series.

This comic is Freeway Fighter which is based upon the Fighting Fantasy gamebook of the same name. I played so many FF books in the 80s. Today on A-Comic-A-Day we’re asking a simple question… Why aren’t there any other Fighting Fantasy based comics? I want to read them. (It's all about me...)

I’ve been watching old Tarzan films. Yes, this is still A-Comic-A-Day. I like old Tarzan films. For one, they remind me of my Gran, my mum’s mum, who would look after us during the school holidays. On the tele they’d show old films and weird tv shows and we’d all sit on the sofa watching them.

We’ve had Hellboy on A-Comic-A-Day before but he’s such a great character that he’s always welcome back. Hellboy in Hell… How can you go wrong with a title like that?

A train of thought about what makes one thing go on to popularity and another thing be forgotten (the rest of that mental conversation doesn’t matter here) led to John Constantine popping into my head, something that wouldn’t healthy if I existed in his world.

I’m afraid I don’t have the energy for today’s A-Comic-A-Day, and so I’ll leave you with one of the best covers from Marvel’s original Transformers series. Issue 5 in the US and, as I experienced it, issue 22 in the UK. It’s by Mark Bright and it’s fantastic.

A-Comic-A-Day turns to Absolute Evil! Mwahaha! I have atendency, for reasons, to get behind in my comic reading. I buy books and they stack up until my focus shifts back to them and I binge read them again. I’m about halfway through the current Absolute books from DC.

A-Comic-A-Day… My first issue of Shade The Changing Man was volume 2 number 33 in 1993, which, not coincidently, was also the first issue published under the then brand-new Vertigo imprint. I bought everything Vertigo.

I’ve read Batman: A Death in the Family, of course, and not just for A-Comic-A-Day. I don’t remember exactly when I read it, but it was some time after its 1988 release. Here I’ve picked the cover of Batman issue 428 for that wonderfully visceral Mike Mignola cover.

There’s a really nice omnibus volume of George Pérez’ Wonder Woman run staring at me accusingly because I’ve not bought it yet. More overtime on the cards, I guess… Included is Wonder Woman volume 2 issue 7 which is the first appearance of Barbara Ann Minerva, my favourite Cheetah.

Will Tempest first came to my attention with his art in Afterlife Inc., a comic written by Jon Lock that had its own A-Comic-A-Day way back in January. Today, I want to show you a comic created solely by Will @willtempest.bsky.social called Harsh Prospect.

Excalibur is still one of my all-time favourite comics and the cover of issue 4 still makes me smile and that’s why it’s here on A-Comic-A-Day. Nothing more than that.

Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time is exactly the sort of title I want for A-Comic-A-Day. It’s just so much fun. The story is by Mike Mignola and Bruce Zick. The art is by Bruce Zick and the lettering is by Clem Robins.

Not got much time this evening, so A-Comic-A-Day is going to be short, but it is an iconic cover, so it has that going for it. Superman issue 1 from 1939 is significant for reasons I hope I don’t need to expound. That cover has been referenced so many times. And for good reason. It’s a great one.

An A-Comic-A-Day acknowledging the thirty-fifth anniversary of the Judge Dredd Megazine isn’t too much to ask, is it? Number 485 is the landmark issue, if you want to go and get a copy. And of course you do.

I’m full of Japanese food and so let’s make today’s A-Comic-A-Day about a Japanese book that I used to read. Battle Angel Alita, created by Yukito Kishiro, was published here by, I think, Viz Media when I was reading it as single issues.

Sláine makes an appearance in A-Comic-A-Day! Sláine The Horned God first appeared in 2000AD Prog 330 in 1983 and was created by Pat Mills and Angela Kincaid. Sláine is an axe-wielding, Celtic barbarian and wanderer in a fantasy setting.

I’ve not read today’s A-Comic-A-Day book, but I do love a Dave McKean cover and this is one I haven’t seen before. That’s pretty much it. I just found something I like. Sometimes it’s that simple.

As I stood by the counter in my local comic shop waiting for my books to be rung up, I saw the large format title, Endeavour on the shelf. I saw the names on the cover, picked it up and added to the pile. I so glad I did. And now it’s here on A-Comic-A-Day.

We have another Conan comic on A-Comic-A-Day. This time it’s Conan the Barbarian: Scourge of the Serpent issue 1. I don’t need to go into the story here. As usual, go find it, buy it, and read it for yourself. Spoilers aren’t the point here.

This evening I went to the Cheltenham Literature Festival. It’s fantastic and I recommend going. But that’s not the point for A-Comic-A-Day. Are comics literature? Yes! There’s my great and profound revelation. As an example, here’s Ghost World by Daniel Clowes.

A-Comic-A-Day has given me the excuse to consider comics I’ve not read alongside those I have. One long-running British comic I’ve not read is Commando, a war stories book that’s been in publication since 1961.

A-Comic-A-Day… Do you remember when superhero deaths were permanent and meant something? No, neither do I. But they did used to be big events. Take the Death of Superman storyline from 1993 culminating in Superman (volume 2) #75.

A short A-Comic-A-Day as I’m flagging a bit. My comic reading has mostly been British, American, or Japanese titles. One neglected area is European comics. One that was popular with friends when I was at school was Asterix the Gaul.

Today’s A-Comic-A-Day is The Amazing Spider-Man: Torn issue 1 and this is how I feel… …Very happy. Torn is set while Peter was a student at Empire State University, circa ASM#50. A Spidey in the past story again… I like it.

The reason the Right are so invested in the myth that the arts have no value isn’t because the arts don’t generate wealth (they do); it’s that studying the arts teaches people to imagine better ways of judging the value of an idea than by counting how much money it makes…

Definitely a short A-Comic-A-Day this time as I’m knackered. When DC’s Vertigo imprint was started I tried a whole bunch of comics that I wouldn’t otherwise have picked up. I guess that was the point of Vertigo. One of them was Doom Patrol.

The only way the 1% can grab power is if they divide us. (Ex-public schoolboy and banker Farage is very definitely part of the 1%) Don't let them divide us. Black and white. Men and women. Young and old. Rich and poor. Able and disabled. Christian and Muslim... STICK TOGETHER.

I’m not sure if I’ve said before on A-Comic-A-Day, but I’m not sure if my memory works the same way as most people’s. It may, but I don’t think so. I don’t think I remember to the same degree that a lot of people do. I do remember reading Domu: A Child’s Dream by Katsuhiro Otomo.

Today I watched an interview with Ghost of Yōtei creative director Nate Fox and he mentioned reading the comic series Usagi Yojimbo. It reminded that I meant to find out if it’s been collected and to read it. I forgot. And so here it is on A-Comic-A-Day.

This A-Comic-A-Day is The Avengers issue 71 from 1969 for no other reason than I was looking up the first appearance of The Invaders and I found that Sal Buscema did the art for the cover and interiors. It’s a great cover.

I really must get around to doing an A-Comic-A-Day about Strangers in Paradise. I said I would way back at the start of February. Instead, to procrastinate further, I’m going to put up the cover of Strangers in Paradise volume 3 issue 77 because it’s a favourite of mine.
