IDs in HTML are designed to be unique, yet from a quick HTTP archive query it seems like an order of magnitude of 45% of HTML responses in July 2025 had duplicates. Perhaps we should embrace that IDs being unique is a lost battle.

Periodic reminder: a brand new DOM on top of canvas is an idea that floats every so often and would not work. The edge cases already baked into HTML are vast and reproducing all of them in a shiny new thing is futile. We can't go over it, we can't go under it, we've got to go through it.

Can you name a native mobile app that gives you the feeling of "I wouldn't be able to build this on the mobile web" from the UI / UX quality perspective? I am sure there are lots but looking for inspiration of where to look.

Reflecting on the "Extensible web manifesto" from '13 and about the balance between high/low-level web features, and what "prioritize low-level+JS polyfills" means in 2025, especially when mobile is considered. I don't know how to flatten these thoughts to a hot take, so just sharing this for now.

My thoughts after looking a bit at async CSS use cases (loading "non critical" stylesheets without blocking, e.g. by setting media/ rel using script) is that they're a racy and footgunny solution to the problems they try to solve, resulting in hard-to-detect flashes of un-styled content (FoUC).

CORS metaphor: You live in a village where people mostly trust each other and some don't always lock their door. You brought a guest. To protect *the village*, one of the locals walks with the guest everywhere, making sure they knock and introduce themselves before entering houses.

I wonder how it would look like if we had an SPA framework that had ~0 client-side runtime (compiled or imported). It would rely on server-side for the hard parts, and on opinionated lint rules to guide devs through the edgy parts of vanilla when client-side is needed. Just a thought for now.

A programming practice I've grown to become suspicious of is the "loosely coupled" principle, often expressed as hooks/observers. It's sometimes great, other times mandatory, but often an overkill that promotes loosely defined behavior and scattered logic.
