Perhaps one day fashion will be taken more seriously. But the question of whether fashion is art, as posed by last night's Met Gala, is answered with a resounding "no" if you look at the community's response. For many people, these outfits are not art but signs of social decay.

This is not so with clothing. Few people consider the farmers, spinners, weavers, dyers, designers, pattern makers, sewers, embroiderers, finishers, and pressers that collaborate to produce something fantastical. I doubt there's much I can say on social media that will change people's biases.

When I see a beautiful painting, even if it's in someone's home, my first thought is not "why is this person showing off?" Even if that person bought the painting and hung it on their wall, I think the artist first. What was their intention? How is their skill? What is the meaning?

Much like how knitting (a feminine-coded activity) is relegated to "crafts," while sculptures (a masculine-coded activity) is elevated to the "arts," it's assumed that this sort of stuff isn't "serious" and thus subject to harsher scrutiny.

— Fashion is a feminine coded interest and thus considered frivolous, whereas masculine-coded interests, such as architecture, are considered "serious." Doesn't matter if a tremendous amount of skilled labor or creativity went into making something, such as the handmade lace or shoulder line below.

But such outfits offend people — really offend people — because people don't think of clothes as anything more than consumables. It's notable to me that the Met Gala gets compared to the Hunger Games, whereas such criticism is rarely levied at the Oscar's red carpet or the Super Bowl halftime show.

To be sure, there's no question in my mind that Wintour made the right decision. The increased spectacle and shift towards corporate sponsors — who use the night for marketing — have raised so much money, the Costume Institute has enough savings to potentially be self-sufficient in a few years.

If the Met Gala tried to answer whether fashion is art last night, the answer would not come from the objects shown at the gala, but from the discourse on social media. As you can see from reactions, people still primarily see clothes as consumables, akin to shaving creams or office supplies.

I love movies about time travel and time loops... and still, "Predestination" is the weirdest time loop movie I've ever seen. Entertaining but mind boggling in a good way. Well done but still surprising.
