I agree, but also feel like there are a number of actors that still do that. Jack Black for example is in a number of relatively dumb films but his performance is always locked in even if he's playing Bowser. Jim Carey in the Sonic movies is similar.

This is why I have a problem with some of the dialog in "Stranger Things". As an example, a scene where a kid says (in regard to his thinking), "I'm processing what happened". Kids did NOT say that kind of stuff in the 80s. Adults didn't say that phrase either

It’s a 21st century disease. In the 90s, there were certain types of comedies that depended on irreverent fourth wall breaking snark. Animaniacs did this beautifully. But when everything is Animaniacs, it ruins the magic.

When Bryan Cranston was playing the dad in Malcolm in the Middle, I kept telling my son, “This guy is a really good actor!” He committed completely to the character, and because of that he was able to bring humanity to a character that could have easily been a cartoon with a lesser actor.

I do think the key for things like Home Alone, Muppet Christmas Carol, etc. is that the actors fully commit to the bit I feel like similar films made now lean too heavily into doing it ironically
