She froze to death. Is her boyfriend to blame for leaving?
A distant webcam captured the moments the coupleâs hiking trip started to unravel. The pair, a boyfriend and girlfriend, were nearing the summit of Grossglockner, the tallest mountain in the Austrian Alps, when their lights appeared on its dark peak.Around midnight, the man said, his girlfriend was struck by sudden exhaustion and could not continue. He said the two made a contentious, if not uncommon, decision: He would leave her behind and continue alone to find help.Hours later, he was out of harmâs way, and the woman was dead.

One lucky couple has beaten extraordinary odds to win ÂŁ1m on the National Lottery â for the second time. Richard Davies, 49, and Faye Stevenson-Davies, 43, first scooped a seven-figure jackpot playing the EuroMillions Millionaire Maker in June 2018. On The Abyss, a rat used to demonstrate the filmâs oxygenated water technology drowned during filming. Faced with the prospect of a dead rat â and losing the productionâs âNo Animals Were Harmedâ certification â Cameron performed CPR on the rodent. The rat sprang back to life, and Cameron adopted âBeanieâ as his pet. One can understand why a director like Cameron would go to extremes to protect his filmâs reputation.

The mission demanded the utmost secrecy. A team of American climbers, handpicked by the C.I.A. for their mountaineering skills â and their willingness to keep their mouths shut â were fighting their way up one of the highest mountains in the Himalayas. Step by step, they trudged up the razor-toothed ridge, the wind slamming their faces, their crampons clinging precariously to the ice.

Napoleon wrote a romantic novel about a former lover
Clisson et Eugénie, also known in English as Clisson and Eugénie, is a romantic novella, written by Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon wrote Clisson et Eugénie in 1795, and it is widely acknowledged as being a fictionalised account of the doomed romance of a soldier and his lover, which paralleled Bonaparte's own relationship with Eugénie Désirée Clary. Clisson, a heroic revolutionary French soldier, but tired of war, meets and falls for Eugénie at a public bath.

It is a drizzly October afternoon and I am sitting in a rural Lancashire pub drinking pints of Moretti with Londonâs leading snail farmer and a convicted member of the Naples mafia. Weâre discussing the best way to stop a mollusc orgy. The farmer, a 79-year-old former shoe salesman called Terry Ball who has made and lost multiple fortunes, has been cheerfully telling me in great detail for several hours about how he was inspired by former Conservative minister Michael Gove to use snails to cheat local councils out of tens of millions of pounds in taxes.

It began with a rumour. Years after the war ended, stories started circulating about a Polish doctor who had supposedly saved thousands of Jews from the gas chambers by inventing a false epidemic. Newspapers repeated it. A documentary crew went looking for it. A myth formed around the idea that one man and one clever medical trick had preserved a large Jewish population from certain death.

It is easy to miss Californiaâs biggest environmental disaster. Driving north on Highway 111, you wouldnât expect to find an inland sea. If itâs summer, the thermometer in your car could read 115 degrees. But amid the shimmering heat, there are signs of water. All around you, rows of broccoli, lettuce, and alfalfa stretch in every direction. In the fields, farmworkers bend and straighten.

The infamous Black Death â a pandemic that killed as many as one third to one half of Europeans within just a few years â may have been aided in its devastation by an unknown volcanic eruption. Thatâs the hypothesis presented in research published December 4 in Communications Earth & Environment, which argues that the eruption triggered several seasons of climate instability and crop failures.

Santa Claus was nursing a beer at an uptown dive bar. The neighborhood was gentrifying, and management seemed eager to accommodateâthere was scented soap in the bathroom and twenty-two-dollar lobster rolls. But the place couldnât outrun the regulars. They drank tumblers of Irish whiskey filled to the brim, illicit pours they secured with ten-dollar tips to a curvy Dominican bartender. Santa â Billy â was fiftyish, with a modest gut, gray hair, a lustrous beard, and a caddish gaze that followed the bartender up and down the rail.

In the late 1990s, when most people just about had an email address and the smartphone with even one G, never mind five of them, was just a twinkle in a mad inventorâs eye, the internet was still regarded by many as the preserve of the nerd. Most of the record industry either treated it as an irrelevance or, with the advent of Napster and other streaming services a few years later, a threat.

Fun trick: Try to get a German person to say the word squirrel
If you are bored and there are German-speaking people around, try to get them to say the English word "squirrel." They may try valiantly to do so, but most will be unable -- for the simple reason that the word contains a number of sounds that either don't exist in the German language or never appear in that order. The soft "w" sound that the "uir" in squirrel involves, for example, doesn't exist -- w is exclusively pronounced as a hard V (conversely, the letter "v" is pronounced like an F, so Volkswagen sounds like Folksvagen).

Lead poisoning may have led to a generation of serial killers
The Pacific Northwest is known for five things: lumber, aircraft, tech, coffee, and crime. What might account for the abrupt rise and equally abrupt fall, between the nineteen-sixties and the turn of the century, of the âgolden ageâ of serial killing? And why were so many of these brutes cradled in a crescent of psychopathy around Seattleâs Puget Sound? Fraser thinks the master key is to be found in the fact that the area south and southwest of Seattle was home to massive ore-processing facilities, and her subjects were reared in their murky shadows.

One of my favourite stories of the year
If you didn't see the image at the top of this post, it appeared on the photo wires and in many newspapers and other media outlets following the brazen robbery of the Louvre in Paris, where a group of thieves stole jewellery and other artifacts worth about $100 million (some of the thieves have since been caught). But the theft itself isn't my favourite part of this story â not even the part where the password the Louvre allegedly used for their video surveillance system was the word "password." The photo instantly went viral because of the extremely dapper individual in the fedora and vest with the umbrella -- "please let this be the French detective assigned to the case," said one post.

In 2015, David Hole was prospecting in Maryborough Regional Park near Melbourne, Australia. Armed with a metal detector, he discovered something out of the ordinary â a very heavy, reddish rock resting in some yellow clay. He took it home and tried everything to open it, sure that there was a gold nugget inside the rock â after all, Maryborough is in the Goldfields region, where the Australian gold rush peaked in the 19th century.
