We will remember everyone. Everyone who fought, who lived, who died, and every conscientious objector, too. We will remember their sacrifice. We will remember their belief in freedom, and the common humanity that unites us.

Alongside my poppy at the cenotaph this year, I’ll be wearing the red triangle to remember the liberation 80 years ago of humanists who were held in the camps wearing this badge like other political opponents of fascism. We must have courage to stand against fascism and for freedom in every age.

So many precious and unique lives have been lost to war, whether noble sacrifices in a great cause for democracy and freedom, or wasted in squalid skirmishes for ignoble reasons. Today at the cenotaph I thought of them as well as committing to work for peace and human rights for all people.
