Despite widespread claims, there are not many mediaeval pubs still serving. The ones that survive are all inns. The best preserved is the New Inn at Gloucester. We know from tree-ring dating that construction began in 1432 and it was first mentioned in the records in 1455 🧵

The Cameron-Osborne years offer an important reminder that it is possible to excel at the theatre of politics - to "look prime ministerial", to dominate the "media narrative", to project "competence" and to communicate a clear political "story" - while being strikingly inept at governing.

A bit of the tracery of Greyfriars Gloucester. Founded in c. 1231, the Franciscan friary had local support and saw major rebuilding in 1519. Post Henry VIII's dissolution of monasteries it became workshops and houses, the walls and windows hidden, but surviving.

This was a fascinating site - couple of Roman buildings, a limekiln, a palaeochannel. All dug in the rain during COVID. Without the consideration of archaeology in the planning system this would have been lost without record:

Happy Lunar New Year! 2025 is the year of the Snake and to commemorate this, we have an image of a relief of Mercury from our Roman Gallery. Mercury was known as the messenger of the gods and is often depicted with a Caduceus - a staff that features two intertwining snakes at the top of shaft.
