Yeah it’s important for progressives/leftists to witness conservatives pulling this Nixonian “silent majority” bullshit and NOT MAKE THE SAME GODDAMN MISTAKE of assuming your own political beliefs or history or time aligns with some mythical group named “the people” who are just waiting to rise up

Look, if your response to Black and feminist critiques of Bernie 2016 was to double down and point to Black Bernie supporters and female Bernie supporters and say “what problem?” and ten years later you’re still right there, you’re worthless to the movement. The movement’s moved. You’re dead weight

Two people who were hired to gather signatures for a Portland ballot initiative that would use clean energy funds to hire police say they were trained to mislead the public about the proposal. At least one person has already detailed their concerns about the campaign in a state ethics complaint.

While the "conservative art" convo is going, note how "The End of the Innocence" walks the edge of conservatism without jumping in. The video invokes traditional imagery in elegy for a way of life and to indict Henley's generation: "Now we've come so far so fast," and look at what we've given up.

Closing in on a finished manuscript of a book I didn’t expect to write and feeling anxious about it, knowing I’ve lived a life that all but guarantees that if I manage to get it published, there are people I’ve known who are going to read it purely to find out whether I’m getting revenge

Conservative art exists, you probably like some of it. It’s backwards-looking, preoccupied with squaring its concerns with those of the “great art” of the past. T.S. Eliot laid the foundation for the leading (and conservative) literary-critical movement of the twentieth century. Important essay:

This is a great example of having the will part of conservative masculinity - a guy having an independent partner (who he hasn’t forced to marry) *is* a scandal to them. His inability to get her to eat meat is a failure to impose his will on her, and makes him weak. It’s illegible to us.

Oh yeah. By the time I left my hometown for college it was clear to me that “masculinity” was and was understood to be primarily a license to be willful and arbitrarily and a means of designating people and groups as subject to its ridicule, abuse, and silencing,. And that the license was revocable

I wouldn’t be surprised if after Portland voters reject PPB’s effort to swipe millions of dollars from the climate energy fund, the cops then staged a 2020-style wildcat strike on account of residents not adequately loving them

Having soured on James Joyce and celebrity after high school I used to scowl when people bragged about knowing people who were reading Ulysses like they were talking up their neighbor’s son’s heifer winning blue at the county fair. Book is hysterical though, James Joyce you are a friend for life

I’ve been stuck on the example of the 12,000-line change set that “merges with no one having read the full set of changes” remembering just a few years ago working at a place where code changes were nitpicked and a pull request might be marked as unmergeable if a variable name was ambiguous

Portland, if the bold text on the petition says “Clean Energy” and “25%” get loud and tell the canvasser they’re stealing from PCEF. Don’t think twice, don’t doubt yourself, don’t let them gaslight you. “Clean Energy” + “25%” = cops stealing from PCEF. Get loud so others hear.

Urban Alchemy was shady af before Ted Wheeler brought them in: misuse of funds, SA, all of it logged in court filings. Did Wheeler know? He had to know. Why’d he bring them in anyway? Attraction to a shiny readymade fix? Gleeful anticipation of violence against the city’s poor? Are there kickbacks?
