Since the 90s governments have pushed universities to run more like big business. This led to high executive pay, dissatisfied 'customers', mutinous staff, disbanding socially useful but 'unprofitable' divisions, and lavish spending on white elephant prestige projects. So, in fairness, it worked.

'In the letter, made public on 10 February, Julia Black...says the “range of cutbacks we are seeing across universities is leading to a severe loss in UK capability".' Nearly 100 HEIs are “contracting or closing” social sciences, humanities & the arts disciplines “in the face of a financial crisis”.

Our members have given a clear message, cuts this way is not the way forward. They want a more democratic governance of their university, reasonable workloads, and most importantly, to stop this devastating approach to HE as a business. oh, and if you want to sign the letter the article refers to:
