One of the fascinating parts of Numenor’s original ecology was that they didn’t have huge land predators at all. Bears, the top omnivore of many ecosystems, were present –though they, like horses, squirrels and dogs, had peculiar characteristics. Let’s see!

Our series of Númenor lore turned towards animals last week with the horses and dogs, and we continue this week with a most unusual but delightful house pet: squirrels! Tolkien lists a vast array of animals of land and sea that called the island of Elenna home –

Rohan wasn’t the only nation in Tolkien’s world with great horse culture. The passages in the graphics show us just how special these creatures were to the Númenóreans, how well they cared for them and thoroughly trained them.

Númenóreans mainly devoted their energy to craftwork, but they also engaged in games and physical sports. They (primarily the men) took great joy in activities such as climbing, fishing, swimming, and diving.

We wish a belated happy birthday to Cynthia Addai-Robinson, our Queen Míriel. Her portrayal of one of the few named female characters of the Second Age is full of dignity, strength and quiet conviction and faith. A true Woman of Númenor.

The Númenóreans, just like the Eldar, tended to make the period of parenthood a single connected and limited period of their lives. It was natural and desired that the period of child-bearing should be an ordered and unbroken series.

The Númenor Difference: Númenorean Aging 🌊⛵✨ When the First Age was closing and Morgoth was defeated, the last remaining Edain – those humans who fought alongside the Elves to overthrow the Dark Enemy – were gifted a new place to live and exceptional knowledge from some of the Valar and Maiar.

The Elendilmir, aka the Star of Elendil, was the name of two star-shaped white gems, set upon mithril fillets (circlets). It was a symbol of royalty among the Kings of Arnor & their descendants. The original, first Elendilmir, was made for Silmariën, daughter of Tar-Elendil (4th Númenorean King).

Eruhantalë means "Thanksgiving to Eru" in Quenya, from the word hantalë ("thanksgiving") It was the last of the Three Prayers to Eru spoken each year by the King or Queen of Númenor.

The land of Númenor resembled in outline a five-pointed star, or pentangle, with a central portion some two hundred and fifty miles across, north and south, and east and west, from which extended five large peninsular promontories.
