The BlueSky Starmer haters who are basically suggesting he should send a Royal Navy task force to the North Atlantic, to defend Greenland from a potential American attack, may want to consider the implications of that. Having HMS Queen Elizabeth sunk, with 1000 people on board, would be careless.

It was funny a few years ago, in a dark way, to hear UK government ministers proclaiming "We've ended Freedom of Movement," as some kind of achievement. The only FoM they'd ended was OURS. Everyone else just had one less country to move freely in. Even THAT wasn't an achievement, but a tragedy.

Excellent post. And in my view the inward migration benefits of FoM should be emphasised. The UK lost thousands of experienced and competent doctors, nurses, teachers and care workers after Brexit, all of whom worked hard and paid taxes into the economy. Embracing FoM is crucial to any serious deal.

I went for a walk the other weekend where the flags are, on my way to a nature reserve where sometimes you can spot a kingfisher. I'm a white woman, I have a huge amount of privilege in this space, and the flags felt so oppressive. They are designed to intimidate, they are an anti-migrant campaign!

Such a travesty that this level of positivity for FOM is not reflected in our representatives in parliament.

The most important step towards any decent future UK/EU relationship is to win hearts and minds over embracing Freedom of Movement. Focusing on the loss of excellent doctors, teachers, nurses, care workers etc. is more impactful than talking about Brits in queues at Dover.
