This is what we lost my dad to. Good news about research. Infuriating that the administration wants to shut down cancer research.

As a former scientist, I can confirm this. People make big sacrifices to be researchers — years of school and very low pay. You are usually poor for at least a decade. Also, most science can't be done without expensive equipment. You can't just set up a cancer research lab in your spare bedroom.
