The 50th anniversary of IDEA is a moment to celebrate and take action. Before IDEA, millions of children with disabilities were denied access to quality education. With the anniversary this Saturday, NEA is sharing ways to talk about the importance of protecting students’ rights this holiday season.

Families want schools where every child feels welcomed, supported, and able to learn. From Texas to Pennsylvania to Ohio, voters elected Democrat-backed candidates in some of the nation’s largest school systems; a clear sign that communities are choosing inclusive public schools over division.

Educators know the recent interruption of SNAP benefits will hit students hard. Yet across the country, education support professionals—many of whom rely on SNAP themselves—are stepping up to make sure students and their families don’t go hungry.

This week we mark the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). IDEA made educational spaces more inclusive and accessible...but there is work to be done.

I had the privilege of visiting Barrett Elementary with @neatoday.bsky.social colleagues to kick off #AEW2025! A heartfelt thank you to the cafeteria workers who welcomed me onto lunch duty and to every education support professional who does the work behind the scenes so our students can thrive.

On #TransDayOfRemembrance, we honor our trans siblings lost to fatal violence and their impact. We will not stop fighting until trans people are not just able to survive, but thrive and live safe, full, and joyful lives. May our collective grief, reflection, and action lead to a better future.

Shifting vital education programs across federal agencies weakens civil rights protections, undermines support for low-income and first-generation students, and threatens equal opportunity. Closing the Education Dept. would harm the very students it exists to serve.

BREAKING: The Trump administration says it will transfer many of the Department of Education’s programs to other agencies, effectively attempting to dismantle much of the department. This is an attempt to get around the law, which states that only Congress can unilaterally eliminate the DOE.

The National Education Association (NEA) kicked off American Education Week this morning at @barrettaps.bsky.social, serving school lunch, reading to students, and leading a hands-on cooking activity. In addition, the NEA donated $5,000 to Barrett, and APS received a $10,000 donation.

Every child deserves to be nourished and ready to learn. But food insecurity is still a barrier in too many communities. We’re grateful to support Arlington Public School families with a donation reducing student lunch balances, and supporting Barrett Elementary’s healthy food programs.
