Yesterday, we began #BlackHistoryMonth. When I think of reflecting on Black history and racial justice, these are the books that I turn to.

WATCH: On Wednesday, AEA President Marisol Garcia took Arizona’s education crisis to the U.S. Senate — exposing the state’s neglect of public schools and the low pay driving educators out of the classroom.

Today is #WorldHijabDay, a chance to show solidarity with Muslim girls and women and push back against against bigotry, discrimination, and Islamophobia. All communities are stronger because of their diversity.

Together. That is how we will create a future that is worthy of students all across our nation. Not distracted or divided—together.

I have said over and over again that I have never been more proud to be an educator than I am today. And in this critical moment, we will not stop advocating for our students' needs.

A bipartisan majority of senators agreed to pause funding ICE while they discuss holding ICE accountable. Our leaders have a moral and constitutional duty to prevent more violence, trauma, and death.

When the people remain united, any change is possible.

We, as educators, will always speak out to protect our students and our communities.

Today marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day—a moment to reflect and to grieve. It is also a time to continue our resolve against antisemitism, and recommit to the fight against bias and hate wherever it appears.

Amidst the violence and fear perpetrated in Minneapolis, Congress absolutely cannot rush forward with a bill that advances additional funding for ICE. In this moment, we must pause funding to ICE.

In this moment of pain, our union stands with Minnesota, holding space for grief and demanding accountability.

I have seen the video. It is horrific and inexcusable. Another Minnesotan killed in the street by ICE agents. At 7pm CT today, light a candle in solidarity with Minnesota. Together, with moral clarity and courage, we demand ICE leave our communities and stop traumatizing our students and families.

Today I wear blue in solidarity with Minneapolis, and all communities targeted by ICE. Children and families deserve safety and security, period. #ICEOutSchools

Loving all the blue we’re seeing from folks here in Minnesota and across the country today! Keep the solidarity coming! Every child deserves to attend a safe, welcoming public school, but that cannot happen with ICE agents circling school buildings and bus stops #ICEOutSchools 💙

Schools should be safe, peaceful places of learning in our communities—free from fear and violence. Tell Congress to keep ICE our of our schools, churches, and hospitals.

At a minimum, Congress should support students and keep them safe. While the House just passed crucial education funding—including for Title I & IDEA—they also approved more funds for the Dept of Homeland Security. At a time when ICE is traumatizing students & communities, this is unacceptable.

A five-year-old. Wearing a Spiderman backpack. Children should never be pawns in a violent political game. This is why NEA’s members are mobilizing to demand: ICE must leave our schools and communities immediately.

Last night, I was heartened to join parents, students, and community members for Color of Change's webinar on voucher schemes. We discussed the dangers of vouchers—and how we can all come together to resist them.

One year ago today, President Trump was inaugurated once again. It has been a year of rallying for our professions. Of advocating for our students. Of protecting our public schools. And despite every effort to divide us, we remain undaunted.

Martin Luther King Jr. said, "The road to freedom is a difficult, hard road. It always makes for temporary setbacks." We lament our struggles, but also, we organize. Our values and our resolve will not change. Our students need us advocating for them—now more than ever.

This is the road through history we must travel. These are the circumstances we must face. These are the challenges we must overcome—for our students, for our families, and for our communities.

January is when we look back at the year behind us—and build our power for the year ahead.

As educators, we have a moral and professional responsibility to keep all students safe, no matter where they were born or who they are. We stand firmly with parents, neighbors, and faith leaders in Minneapolis and beyond to defend our schools and protect our students.

This. One job should be enough.

Discrimination has no place in schools—not just in the classroom, but on the field and on the court. All of our students deserve to learn teamwork, explore their interests, and play with friends, regardless of gender. As I watch the Supreme Court arguments today, I know equality must prevail.

This is why we cannot afford the deep SNAP cuts enacted by Trump and Congressional Republicans—food insecurity is already at an unacceptable high. No student can be expected to learn on an empty stomach.

All children and families deserve affordable health care—period. Finally, the House is reversing the health care crisis that Trump and Congressional Republicans created. Now it's the Senate's turn to pass this bill, fix this mess, and ensure families are not bankrupted by skyrocketing premiums.

Our schools and communities should be places of learning and belonging, safe for all. The presence of ICE undermines this mission. We need an immediate, transparent, and independent investigation into this shooting. And we must end ICE's presence in every community before further harm is done.

This week marks 1 year since we led repeal of GPO-WEP, the laws robbing public servants of earned retirement benefits—those impacted have seen an average monthly Social Security increase of $360. Truly life-changing—being able to retire, fund a grandkid's education, or just finally make ends meet.

We will face the challenges of this new year with light, with love, and above all—together ✊🏾 ✊🏻 ✊🏼
