None of this is a surprise surely. Cheap driving (at the point of use), potentially high sunk cost in the car, and no environmental concerns. People are going to drive everywhere they can, all the time. Nobody with an EV is going to get the train. Seriously.

First ride along the (not quite finished) “Seafront Sustainable Route” from Whitley Bay to/through Cullercoats. Some bits of first half are good, but the absence of kerb separation makes has a real impact on meandering pedestrians, and the parallel paths are far too narrow at times.

If you'd suggested turning this road into a walking and cycling route only you'd have been laughed out of town. The 'chaos' it would cause. And then the bridge failed, and motor vehicles can no longer get through. And everything is absolutely fine, and this is now a fantastic few miles car free.
