Traveling makes me scrutinize public spaces, especially from a disabled perspective, and it’s very annoying that designers miss so much. Like ventilation. Like airport gate seats that put strangers back to back at a slight recline. Like no benches outside the car rental/shuttle.

Who do I talk to about food making place ventilation? Is it necessary to be plagued by burnt oil smell everywhere we go? That can’t be good for people.

We are heading back home after a week in Albuquerque for our eldest’s wedding! Their wedding was so thoughtful and personal and we’re simply thrilled for them. The travel portion is not always so fun, but we had a great time in a beautiful city. And we got see both kids and partners.

Albuquerque is a really beautiful city. There’s been such care and attention paid to city infrastructure, tree and understory plantings, and preservation of historic and cultural districts. There are public art installations everywhere. The cultural pride is evident and it’s so amazing to see. #NM

Mistakes were made. By me, I made the mistake. I did copious research on lodging and chose a room that seemed romantic and like New Mexico and dismissed other options that were much more suitable for someone who requires an accessible space. A toilet 13-inches high with no grab bars is not it.

Flying in 12 hours: commence drink all the water. Fight disorientation because up with sick cat all night after learning about midwest storms that necessitated us rerouting our entire flight plan. Get cat to vet for antibiotics and pain meds. And now we’re flying at 6am instead of right now. 😵‍💫

My all-night diner + motel + miniature golf in the woods with sliding-scale prices, completely accessible, teen-friendly third space, welcoming 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️, nutritious delicious food using Maine’s bounty. Old fashioned mini-golf, not the sort with fake pirate mountains and blue water.

This was a huge benefit of our unschooling with the kids. We got to live and work together as a family, and their peer groups were mixed ages, so everyone was engaging in play and learning with kids younger and older with lots of adults in the mix. Our kids had a close sibling relationship, too.
