This study by my colleagues at University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa shows that deep sea mining waste to be released near the ocean surface would disrupt marine food webs. The same would be true of grinding and spreading rocks in the ocean for CO₂ removal. 🌊

I'm concerned about the communication of coral reef "tipping points". Reducing global coral reef ecology down to a tipping point at 1.2°C is a damaging simplification, particularly given that "tipping point" is rarely rigorously defined (particularly not in public-facing communication).

@oxuniearthsci.bsky.social 2025 Bermuda trip is complete! We were super lucky to see a trichodesmium bloom in the Sargasso Sea and sampled an anoxic layer in Harrington Sound (usually fully mixed at this time). Bermuda is a perfect location to bridge modern and paleo ocean-climate processes!

This is an incredibly important point. I know it's a touchy subject for students and scientists who increasingly rely on LLMs, but I'm very worried about the damage it might be causing to our ability to think - no matter how superficially impressive the output may be. Highly recommend this paper!

We also found strong evidence for large-scale illegal disposal of consumer waste from ships near Seychelles, and similar reports exist across the world (e.g. the S Atlantic and S Pacific). It's a rarely discussed source of marine plastic pollution but it seems it's subject to almost no enforcement.
