i have never even come close to being able to make a living as a writer, and my biggest dream right now is to be a published novelist who also works a day job as a librarian. because maybe then i can be financially stable again.

legit astonished there are people with a sincere emotional investment in He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. i'm not mocking it, i'm just so baffled that i can't begin to grasp how it's possible.

okay, i looked at the Guardian's 100 best novels list, and i have quibbles: 1. i don't think you should have more than one book by the same author on it (I like Dickens, but there's _way_ too much Dickens on here). 2. there's no Pynchon, which invalidates the entire enterprise.

finished Gene Wolfe's In Green's Jungles last night, and goddamn--people who say that his Short Sun trilogy is some of his best writing aren't kidding around.

it's completely impossible for me to believe Kevin Spacey as a character in a movie now. he's a monster, obviously, but there are old Mel Gibson movies that still run fine for me--with Spacey, it's like, once you see the sociopath under the face, you can't believe him as anything but him.

if i was the creator of Night Vale, i would simply not draw attention to a television show that was using the same tropes as i did in a much more effective way.

i went through a Miike phase in my twenties, and this one felt the most aggressively fucked up to me. even more than Ichi the Killer. (early scene: father visiting a brothel and the sex worker is his daughter and THIS DOES NOT STOP THE INTERACTION)(THAT IS NOT THE MOST FUCKED UP THING EITHER)

this week's Babylon 5 review is live for my patrons! We're talking about "Legacies," an interesting story hindered by a lackluster guest star performance:

I’ve read 40 of these. It’s a perfectly fine list, albeit one without quite enough weirdness to be interesting.

i really wish we didn't have to have a big discussion every time racist fuckwits are racist fuckwits about a casting decision. it's like having to shout down a five year-old who keeps insisting that 2 + 2 equals 5.

about halfway through In Green's Jungles by Gene Wolfe; it's a remarkable piece of work, but slightly difficult to recommend, given that you need to read at least five other books (and, honestly, more like eight) to really appreciate it.

Widow's Bay has, for the most part, resolved most of my critical reservations--it's a good, smart show; i think at this point, i just keep my fingers crossed it won't turn into another Night Vale, where "scary" just became another aesthetic without any real intent behind it.

it's funny how stories come around again--while i'm sure it has its own spin, OBSESSION has the same premise as the Tales from the Crypt episode "Loved To Death," which is itself a riff on the Twilight Zone episode "The Chaser."

hearing about movies being turned into TV shows these days gives me the same exhaustion i used to get from learning about "live action" Disney remakes. it's a long-standing tradition, but the ones we get now just sound like padded versions of the real thing, as opposed to something worth doing.

i don't know if this is odd or not: when people say "don't worry so much what other people think of you," i don't ever think it refers to me, because i don't _worry_--i just legitimately believe that other people define reality and whatever i think isn't as important.

i remember there being a brief discourse about how we needed more "dating advice for the left," but speaking as someone who is terrible at dating, i have to tell you the sad truth: the only advice that matters is "be true to yourself and try to meet people with similar interests."

reading Gene Wolfe again and wondering if it would be possible for a writer like him to get published these days--his work is so idiosyncratic, so interested in teaching us how to read him and not making it easy on the reader, that it feels like it would slide right through the modern market.

it's funny--i've put 260 hours into Elden Ring and i still haven't actually finished it. haven't beaten Melenia, the wrestler dude, the final DLC boss, or the Elden Beast. it's not that they're too difficult, i just lose interest when i get to a boss i know won't open new areas.

using AI to write is an anathema to me for many reasons, but a practical one is that i can only tell when my writing is good when i _feel_ it's going well. it's a deeply personal act, and using a shitty computer program to--whatever it is these losers do--would destroy the whole process.
